He also attracted major corporates and sovereign funds, including Axiata, Johor Corporation, and Khazanah Nasional, to invest in venture capital funds. In total, Jamal helped create, manage, and participate in nine funds with a combined size exceeding US$500 million.
At Gobi, Jamal led the creation and launch of a US$20 million venture fund in Pakistan in collaboration with the Fatima Group, one of the country’s largest conglomerates. Since 2014, funds under his oversight have invested in more than 430 companies, including Southeast Asian unicorns Bukalapak and Grab, as well as Malaysian success stories such as Aerodyne, FashionValet, EasyParcel, Katsana, and TheLorry.
Jamal remains active in Malaysia’s startup ecosystem. He has served as Chairman of the Malaysian Venture Capital Association, a member of the Malaysian Venture Capital Development Council, a founding member and Treasurer of the Global Entrepreneurship Movement, and an investment committee member for multiple venture funds and government grant programmes.
